I finally both look and feel pregnant. I feel appropriate dressed up in maternity clothes and can do most of the things that I need to on a regular basis-including smile for the camera.
Even though I would really like to spend more time doing this:
The cats are definitely in favor of the recumbent position as well.
My first sweater-the Ophelia cardigan in Knitpicks Comfy. I was surprised at how quickly it worked up until I remembered that most of my projects up until this point had either been on #2 needles or lace. I had hoped to wear it to Camille's graduation but ended up sleeping on the plane instead of knitting. It was finished just in time to go to Folklife, though.
Evenstar fingerless glove #1:
I had a dreadful time photographing this without the cats getting in the way. The law of cat attraction apparently applies to yarn too. In fact, they liked this particular yarn so much that Edison figured out how to open my backpack and extract the partially finished glove and yarn ball from the project pouch in order to carry it off in high glee to kill it in several corners of the house. There are a couple of fuzzy spots on the left glove that will never be the same again.
We've been trying to accustom the boys to the idea of being outside in harnesses and riding in the car. While I'm sure that we won't ever be taking them camping with us, they handled it fairly well.
Max must get a little dizzy when the car is moving because he pretty much hunkers down until the movement is over. Edison is happiest in a lap but looking out of the window. Unfortunately, it's usually Jonathan's lap that he wants to be in.
We live on such a busy street right now that letting them out unsupervised (especially during this crazy kitten stage) is a little too hazardous for our taste. However, a bit of curtailed yard exploration can be fun for everyone. What is it with cats liking to sit in dirt?
We were able to go raspberry picking this summer. Forty pounds of berries later, it's time to make jam!
With the excellent help of Elsa and Camille, I spent an afternoon making delicious raspberry jam. This was only the first couple of batches through the canner. We also have been working our way through the bags in the freezer. I am now a full convert to laying out the berries on a baking tray to freeze first, then putting them in bags. It is so much less trouble up front than I expected and much easier to take out a handful at a time for baking or snacking.
We celebrated our fourth anniversary with a trip to Orcas Island.
Where we had a good time exploring, eating tasty seafood and being reminded of God's covenant promises.
We visited the incredible Antony Howe kinetic sculpture garden. It wasn't a particularly windy day, but there was just enough to appreciate the design and intricacy of most of the pieces. This one was mesmerizing.
We went out to an intertidal mound at low tide to clamber around and look through the tide pools.
There were lots of different colors of sea stars--including a couple of sun stars (the kind with lots of extra legs). We also saw several kinds of crabs, shrimp, juvenile fish and anemones.
We felt lucky enough to find this brilliantly colored sea cucumber as well.
There is just no substitute for taking your socks off and walking around on the rocks and through the water. However, a wrong move at the wrong time, can cost you--as Jonathan found. His slip lost him a toenail and caused an impromptu trip to the Orcas Island medical center.
Eddie was glad to see us--and even more glad to play in the fishy-smelling tote bag.
We also learned that we are going to be parents in the spring--April 1st, if all goes well.
It was a very special day.
*Actually, the pregnancy test came first. We took the injunction to take the test first thing in the morning very seriously. So, when I had to get up at 5:30 (well before we had planned to arise), we figured that this was our best chance. When you are that groggy, even news like this is a bit anticlimactic. Jonathan snapped the picture and I went back to bed to pray and try to sleep and the excitement didn't really hit us until later. Not nearly as romantic a moment as we had envisioned--but finding out that we were expecting our first child on our anniversary will still be a special memory.
